Maria R.-Alföldi was a professor of auxiliary sciences of ancient history and of history and culture of the Roman provinces, at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. For decades, she managed the long-term project "Fundmünzen der Antike" of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature, which publishes the Roman coin finds in Germany in a multi-volume series. After the fall of the Wall, she was immediately willing to take over the management of the project "Griechisches Münzwerk" on an interim basis; once the project was anchored at the BBAW, she was in charge of it until it was closed in 2003.
In Maria R.-Alföldi, we have lost an outstanding personality and extraordinary scientist, who always promoted numismatics and financial support of the discipline.
