Founded in 1950, the Numismatic Commission (NK) is a professional representation for numismatics in the Federal Republic of Germany. It includes representatives from the individual federal states as well as representatives for various sub-areas of the discipline. The NK promotes the history of coins and money as well as the registration of coin finds in Germany. The database of medieval and early modern coin finds stands out among the long-standing and highly important projects under its supervision (https://kenom.gbv.de/fundkomplexe/). The Commission also includes the Foundation for the Promotion of Young Scholars, which annually awards the Walter Hävernick Prize for Numismatics for outstanding academic theses, and the Gitta Kastner Research Foundation for research into the modern German art medals post-1871.
