Forgery

date: Circa AD 1820

period: modern

counterfeiter: Caprara

May, Ainos 246, Note 2: in AMNG 337 six forgeries (Berlin, Bukarest, BM, St. Petersburg, Paris, Sotheby SWH 27. Juni 1887, 175) of this type are listed, three from the same pair of dies. Apart from the Berlin specimen, the spurious coins are descidedly over the normal weight, ranging from 16.03 to 17.56g. Another specimen, probably from the same dies, is moddeled on Mionnet's drawing of our No. 413a and it is not impossible that the counterfeiter never saw the original or a genuine coin of this issue. Another forgery from the same reverse die exists, but withpout the helmet, which was evidently added later. Is in the forgeries collection in the Berlin Coin Cabinet.
