ImagNum and Season's Greetings

ImagNum = “IMAGINES NVMMORVM: Thesaurus Iconographicus Nummorum Graecorum Online (ThING)” is the title of an Academy project that will commence on January 1, 2025, at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities with a planned duration of 25 years.

Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Annette Haug (Kiel University), Dr. Ulrike Peter (BBAW), and Prof. Dr. Bernhard Weisser (Coin Cabinet, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin), the project encompasses four core objectives:
1) Publishing Greek coins from the Numismatic Collection, Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz: This work highlights the object-historical dimension of numismatic iconography. With 114,845 items, the collection ranks among the most significant worldwide.
2) Developing an Image Thesaurus: The Thesaurus Iconographicus Nummorum Graecorum is based on Linked Open Data, employs persistent identifiers and standardized exchange formats, and enables context-sensitive analysis of ancient visual language.
3) Creating digital infrastructure and AI tools: These tools integrate the various communicative and contextual aspects of coins and facilitate their analysis.
4) In-depth analysis of selected topics: The collection will be examined in relation to key visual and cultural-historical questions.

We express our sincere thanks to everyone involved for their tremendous support throughout the application process, particularly to the President of the BBAW, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Christoph Markschies, the Academies' Projects Committee, the Commission and the Research Center for Primary Sources of the Ancient World, and the research administration.

The CN team wishes you a peaceful, happy, and joyful holiday season, as well as a healthy and prosperous New Year! We look forward to numerous encounters and intensive exchange.

Please note: We have open positions!
