Interesting paper in the Digital Classicist Seminar
While specific features of visual artifacts have long been measured and compared, recent years have witnessed an increased adoption of deep learning techniques for image pattern recognition in archaeology. The true breakthrough in image analysis, however, appears to be facilitated by the current vision-language models. This paper aims to present and discuss the applications of computer vision in the analysis of 2D and 3D data, focusing on portrait, terracotta, and vase research as illustrative examples.
