Coin of the Month

September 2016: CNT_6097

This month we present to you a bronze coin from a private collection in Berlin. The so called pseudo-autonomous bronze coin from the 2nd c. AD has been minted in Ainos. On the obverse a portrait of Hermes is shown, who can be identified via the caduceus behind his neck. On the reverse Asclepius is standing, leaning on his serpent staff. The motif of the obverse refers to former coin motifs of Ainos from the archaic and classical period, when also Hermes’ head had been depicted. As you will see from our literature section the type is well published and is also inserted in RPC online.
