Coin of the Month

June 2016: CNT_6107

This year we want to show in our Coin of the Month section Thracian coins of the contributors to CNT. A lot of museums, institutions and collectors have already added their Thracian coins to CNT. Thanks to them the number of our data set entries is constantly growing. In our Collections section you may see through one click all coins of a collection you are interested in.

Our Coin of the Month comes from a private collection in Germany. The very nice silver trihemiobol of Thasos is a typical product of archaic art. The Satyr on the obverse shows the characteristic features like the dotted hair and tail, also the way his arms and legs are depicted is usual in this period. The coinage of the island of Thasos is using often motifs connected with wine, the typical product of the island. The reverse shows a mill-sail pattern. The very small coin with a weight of 1.11 g only and a diameter of 11.9 mm can be examined at CNT in his full beauty by using our enlargement function below the picture.
